The Room tells the story of Johnny, a wealthy banker from San Francisco. He is engaged to Lisa, and they live together in a beautiful home. Lisa is having an affair with Mark who is Johnny’s friend. Johnny discovers that Lisa is having an affair but doesn’t know with whom. Johnny becomes mentally distraught trying to figure out who his wife is having an affair with.
He goes to seek help from his friend Peter, who is also a therapist. Mark also goes to Peter for help since they are also friends. During their session, he finds out that Mark is having an affair with Lisa. Peter is furious with Mark but decides to keep it to himself.
At a party with friends and family, Johnny reveals that Lisa is pregnant. Lisa intentionally exposes her infidelity to Johnny at the party. She also reveals that she is not pregnant. It was all a lie to keep Johnny from finding out the truth. Johnny and Mark get into an altercation which ends up with Lisa leaving in the company of Mark.
Johnny and Lisa end up calling off their engagement. Lisa moves into Mark’s apartment, and they begin to live together. Johnny becomes an emotional wreck, and he eventually kills himself in his home. Mark blames Lisa for everything that’s happened to Johnny. He breaks up with her, to avoid falling into the same fate as Johnny.
