Flight
Flight is one of the themes in this play that is seen clearly through Daniel. It is seen realistically in the fact that he seeks to do great things in his life by going after them with all his will; also, it is a metaphor for a child's need to have dreams in there life. Finally, we see it surrealistically in that Daniel is actually able to fly without wings as there is something that is incredibly special about him.
Life Goes On
Daniel returns home after two decades away, and he does so in order to come back for Alice and take her with him. However, Alice is married to Richard and they have a son together, whom they've named after Daniel. Snood doesn't see this, he only desires to be with her and for her to fulfill her promise from 20 years prior to fly away with him. But, she's built a life with Richard, and she won't just leave it because Daniel has come back and decided it's time.
Dreams and Reality
This theme has to do with all of the children in the play. Daniel is a rare example of a young person who knows exactly who they are and won't be swayed in changing that. He has a dream and will fulfill it whatever the obstacle in the way. This play is about the need for dreams, and the reality of life intermixed as life goes on.
