Hawkin’s father

The protagonist's father is lamenting that the BLM and other environmentalists are preventing people from living in the North fall Forest. According to him, people should be allowed to use the forest to earn a living, but the environmentalists think they will kill the forest. On the contrary, people want to do economic activities such as logging while preserving the forest.

“Where? Where are the jobs? You want me to serve cheeseburgers at the McDonald’s?”

Protagonist’s father

Hawkin's parents have a difficult conversation regarding finance and wealth creation. According to Hawkin's mother, her husband is a lazy man who does not want to work but instead prefers to sit at home. According to the mother, her husband should look for a job using all means and earn a living. In response, the father asks to remind her that he was sacked from logging and mining alongside other men in town. Therefore, the father argues that it is not his fault to be jobless.

“Here, she traced the air with her cigarette, as if drawing a smoky map of the world around her. The thoughts just too goddamn depressing.”

Narrator

Hawkin's mother looks disturbed, and she argues that there must be something certain out there that is bound to happen. Her speculation about uncertainty attracts her son's attention, who asks about her confidence in the unseen. The mother points the cigarette at Hawkin and tells him that there is power in faith. The mother loves reading the Bible and other books about Judaism, Buddhism, and Islam. Therefore, she has the faith and power of seeing things that ordinary people like her son can't see.
