Psychoanalyzing the Narrator
Kind of Activity:
Individual Writing
Objective:
Students will analyze the Manet paintings, and using that analysis, psychologically analyze the narrator as a character based on his great appreciation for the two Manet works.
Structure:
Begin this activity by presenting students with the following passages from the text. In chapter 42, when the narrator is about to see Strickland's paintings for the first time, he is excited because, as he says:
"Sometimes people carry to such perfection the mask they have assumed that in due course they actually become the person they seem. But in his book or his picture the real man delivers himself...
