Chapter 1

The novel begins with the narrator describing Charles Strickland. He says that when he first met Strickland, he would have never thought him out of the ordinary, but now he is widely known as a legendary painter. He says that he will attempt to give an honest account of Strickland's life that does not adopt the fawning tone of so many other critics who write about Strickland. He says Strickland was an incredibly gifted artist and a terrible individual.
