The third section of the book comprises the chapters from August 2001--The Settlers through April 2005--Usher II. These chapters describe the various pursuits and experiences of the human settlers on Mars.
Please note--and tell the students--that the chapter June 2003--Way in the Middle of the Air takes place on Earth and describes the reaction of a white racist to the departure of the African Americans in his community, probably in the Deep South. Warn students that the "n-word" is used in this chapter, but it is used by the main racist character, Mr. Teece, and is quite in keeping with his character and his bigotry.
