Regina
Regina is the only daughter of the three Hubbard children, and as such, has very little control over her finances and her fate as a woman in the South. She comes from a family that has cheated their community and the poor out of every cent they can, and she desires to have some autonomy financially. As a result of her desire for freedom and power, Regina becomes ruthless and greedy, alienating those close to her and becoming a horrible villain to her own family members.
Ben
Ben is the eldest of the Hubbard clan and is in control of the decision-making for the family business. He's quick to ensure his interests are protected, and is willing to betray his family if it allows him to make a profit.
Oscar
Oscar is the third of the Hubbard trio. He's cruel to his wife, Birdie, and his cruelty has driven her to drink to excess. Their son, Leo, is in banking and Oscar is quick to demand from Regina that Leo marry her daughter, Alexandra. Like his siblings, he is excessively greedy.
Birdie
Birdie is a Southern aristocrat, the heiress to a large plantation and cotton farm. She is married to Oscar, who is cruel to her, and because of his cruelty, she is a compulsive drinker, depressed by the decay of modern society and nostalgic for the vanished refinement of the old South.
Alexandra
Alexandra is Horace and Regina's daughter. Regina wants to marry her off to Alexandra's cousin, Leo, but she does not want this. By the end, she sees the cruelty, ruthlessness, and greed of her mother and uncles and decides to leave her mother behind.
Horace
Horace is Regina's husband, a store clerk turned banker who never had the same ambition for money as his wife. He is deathly ill, but determined to not to go into business with the avaricious Hubbards.
Leo
Leo is Oscar and Birdie's son. He works in banking for Horace and chooses to betray his uncle by stealing Horace's bonds in order to ensure his father and uncle Ben get what they want.
Addie
Addie is a black servant in Regina's home. She is close with Horace and Alexandra, who both appreciate her service. Horace even leaves her 1700 dollars in the event of his death and tells her to leave Regina's house with Alexandra after he dies.
