Cow
Garrigan is helping Amin by wrapping his wrist after Amin is in a traffic accident when his car hit a cow. Garrigan shoots the cow which is in a great deal of pain when no one else will do it. It is only when Amin discovers that Garrigan is a Scottish man that he doesn't kill him for taking his gun. The imagery reveals how quickly Amin can move from torturous murder in his soul to jovial and charming friendship.
Torture
Garrigan is tortured by Amin's men when he is hung up by the skin of his chest by hooks on a rope. The violent imagery is heightened by the close up shots used by Macdonald as we see Garrigan's pain in close up before he's revealed to be hanging. Amin cries and leaves the room as a tear falls down his face. This shows us that he cares for Garrigan but cannot show it to his men as it's a sign of weakness.
Gas
Garrigan helps Amin to get rid of his stomach pain which is gas built up in his body from taking aspirin and beer together. The scenes imagery reveals that Amin is allowing Garrigan into parts of his life and who he is that he does not allow anyone else into. This is dangerous territory as Amin would kill anyone who knew his weakness, but the "oath" Garrigan takes as being a doctor allows him to remain connected to Amin who believes he can trust Garrigan.
Madman
Amin is enraged at the British and American newspapers who call him a murderer and a cannibal. Amin blames Garrigan for not persuading him to allow the Asians to stay in Uganda. The imagery reveals Amin's instability and lack of taking responsibility for any of his actions; he attributes such actions to everyone else.
