The Last King of Scotland (2006 Film) Analysis

In The Last King of Scotland, several themes and opinions are stated and shown of an important part of world - specifically Ugandan - history. Since it is based on a true story, it is considered to be historically correct, and therefore can be used to learn more about the theme and the setting of the movie.

Mixing both romance and suspense, the film is not only driven by the character development and evolution of Nicholas Garringan, but also by the literal country being rebuilt under a new dictator. In the beginning, he sincerely believes that the new general will better the county. Nevertheless, he learns to listen to the people around him as he evolves, discovering that he is, in fact, not always correct.

Garringan explores many extremes in his lives, and thus confronts several themes. This includes rape, murder and what a person would do for “peace.” In the beginning, it was fairly easy for Garringan to excuse Amin, believing that everything “bad” he did was for the good of the future. That was later proven wrong and he finally comes to a greater conclusion of right and wrong; some things should just never be done.
