Tiffany Haddish
The author, narrator, and protagonist of this memoir is stand-up comedian turned actress, Tiffany Haddish. Haddish first came to prominence on the NBC television series The Carmichael Show and the film Girls Trip. She won her first Emmy Award for hosting duties on episode of Saturday Night Live in 2017 in which she also made history by becoming the first African American female stand-up comedian to ever host the show.
Mom
According to Tiffany, the mental problems that plague her mother coincide with an automobile accident. Prior to the accident, her mother worked as a manage for the postal service while operating two different businesses, and owning two houses. Then a bad marriage to Tiffany’s Step-Father and an accident which forced her to learn how to walk, talk, eat and pretty much everything all over again changed everything. After finally being discharged from the hospital three months later, her behavior grew darker and more disturbing.
Grandma
Haddish was sent to live with her grandmother following her mother’s institutionalization for mental health problems. Grandma comes across as a straight-shooter who tells it like it is but also as a little out of touch with the modern world at times. She is the person from whom Tiffany first learns that she is half-Jewish as well as the difference between being Jewish and merely being a member of a religious sect like Jehovah Witness.
Titus
This character gets his own chapter titled “Titus the Boyfriend” which pretty much explains his role. When they first meet he is twenty-one, has a job as a baggage handler at the airport, and is still living with his mother. Before long he’s pimping a girl named Bertha into pornography. The relationship ends with an abortion and homemade sex tape between Titus and Bertha that was filmed on Tiffany’s birthday.
Ex-Husband
Yes, that is literally the name of the character. Her first husband is not even named by his name, but referred to simply by his future status even in the scenes taking place before they are married. She unceremoniously describes him explicitly as being fat and ugly, but those are complimentary compared to the portrait of his dark behavior she will later describe. For the record, the character known as Ex-Husband is actually named William Stewart.
