Teacher Guide

The Island Lesson Plan

Notes to the Teacher

Teachers should be mindful that discussing South African apartheid is a sensitive topic as it deals with white supremacy, racism, segregation, and crimes against humanity. Students will likely draw comparisons between apartheid and the history of Jim Crow and white supremacy in the U.S. However, be sure to emphasize the differences between these two systems of inequality.

Teachers should be mindful that there is mild sexually explicit language, albeit in a South African language, mentioned in the text.
