Antigone: A Table Reading

Objective:

Students will complete an in-class reading of Antigone and discuss how major themes from Antigone connect to The Island.

Common Core Standards:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.9-10.3

Structure:

Students will have an opportunity to read the full Sophocles play, Antigone. This will provide them with additional context on the Greek tragedy. Students will then reconsider why Athol Fugard placed so much emphasis on creating a "play in a play."

1. Provide each student with a copy (hard copy or digital copy) of Antigone. (5 minutes)
