The Island Lesson Plan

Study Objectives

If all of the elements of this lesson plan are employed, students will develop the following powers, skills, and understanding:

    Understand the historical context of Apartheid-era South Africa and the impact this period had on the lives of Black South African activists and those that resisted the unjust apartheid regime.

    Analyze and draw connections across different readings (The Island and Antigone) and understand why Fugard used the technique, "a play within a play."

  3. 3

    Develop an understanding around the experiences of political prisoners and barriers to re-entry.

  4. 4

    Evaluate how elements of performed drama help illuminate and impact the meaning of dramatic work.
