The Hobbit Lesson Plan

If all of the elements of this lesson plan are employed, students will develop the following powers, skills, and understanding:

   To gain an understanding of the underlying themes of The Hobbit, such as the Hero's Journey, the importance of trickery and cleverness and the corrupting power of wealth.

   To trace the development of the lead characters and examine the way their relationships change, especially through the lens of the quest story.

   To analyze the meanings of significant quotes, and identify their meaning within the context of the novel.

   To examine Tolkien's races with a critical eye.
