Paul finds himself unable to connect with other residents in Georgia Pines, in part because he doesn't like to watch inane shows in the tv room.
Paul does form a friendship with a woman named Elaine, who shows interest in his story instead of the television shows. She finds him sitting in the tv room early one morning, watching the noir Shadow of a Doubt. The violent villain in the movie reminds Paul so much of Wharton that he thought he had seen a ghost.
