Director's Influence on The Fly (1986 Film)

David Cronenberg directed The Fly, and with it came his own unique touch. Known for revitalizing the genre of body horror, Cronenberg likely picked this film so that he could display his talents in this vein. For the most part, he worked with Charles Edward Pogue to create the script for the movie, so he could write in anything that he wanted. The character of Seth was the one that morphed into a fly, so he invested a great deal of time and effort to create the fly costume.

A sequel to the movie was created just a couple of years later, but Cronenberg denied the offer to direct it. Of the films he made, this wasn't his favorite, even though in won him an Academy Award. Without Cronenberg directing, the film would certainly not be as visual, the slow transformation of the Seth character that is instead a quick change that isn't as noticeable. Adding to The Fly much thought and attention, Cronenberg made sure that the movie had every little touch he wanted.
