Gender and Power
In the book, as these characters, mostly women, come into adulthood and come face to face with the reality of what it means to be a woman, they learn how to navigate it and come out better and confident than ever. They get to learn how power and gender are two things that come intact. In Greer’s example, she is unable to attend the college of her dream because of her parents’ mistakes. Her boyfriend, on the other hand, finds it exceptionally easy as all his dreams are realized. Greer has to go to a school she didn’t want then experience a traumatic and humiliating experience that alters her life forever. Despite a successful career, Greer's past is marked with experiences that she can’t take back simply because she was a woman and wasn’t in a position to defend herself from abuse.
Mentorship
Characters in the book especially women often have a mentor-mentee relationship where other women who have been through certain experiences help their fellow women. Faith mentors Greer as she goes through a tough time. She’s always there for her and sees her off as she grows into a confident and able woman. Faith facilities Greer to reach a point where the students outdo the teacher as she is finally able to publish her own book successfully.
