Study Objectives

If all of the elements of this lesson plan are employed, students will develop the following powers, skills, and understanding:

    Students will be able to recognize the conventions of the "cancer book" and how the novel departs from them.

    Students will be able to interpret and analyze the metaphors and symbols present throughout the novel.

  3. 3

    Students will be able to understand the significance of heightened or stylized language in a novel, particularly one about love and death.

    Students will be able to consider with a critical eye the notions of authorial intent and authorial privilege.
