The Dong with a Luminous Noise Themes

The theme of love

The Dong with a Luminous Noise” is a love poem. The imaginary character, Dong, is madly in love with a girl from overseas. The girl is a member of the Jumblies. When Dong sees Jumbly for the first time, he gets attracted to her. Spending time with Jumbly is the best feeling Dong has ever felt. Sadly, Jumbly is not here to stay because she must accompany her fellow Jumblies back to the foreign land. When Jumbly leaves, Dong is heartbroken because he thinks that no one can fill the gap left by Jumbly. As Jumbly leaves, Dong stands at the seashore, his eyes fixed on the horizon, hoping she will return. Dong goes to the seashore every morning to see whether Jumbly is returning. When Dong realizes that Jumbly will never return, he constructs a luminous noise to represent his loss.

Entertainment

Entertainment is another major theme in the poem. Dong loves playing music on his pipe. When the Jumblies come to the shore, Dong entertains them with music. The Jumblies love entertainment because they respond by dancing when Dong plays the music. Jumbly also teaches Dong how to dance according to different tunes of music. The rest of the Jumblies confess that they are in love with Dong’s music and they would wish to visit again.

Friendship

The theme of friendship is evident in the poem. After Dong parts ways with Jumbly, he returns to Jumble Bay and meets the Blue Baboon. The Blue Baboon confesses that he has always wanted to be Dong's friend. Dong realizes he is no longer alone because he has a friend. Consequently, the Dong and the Blue Baboon start supporting each and they become very close friends.
