"The Dong with a Luminous Nose" is what many literary critics call a "nonsense poem." Written by Edward Lear, the poem tells the story of a strange creature named the Dong. The Dong has a bright and shining nose and lives in a land called the Jumbly Bay. The Dong is lonely man and wants nothing more than to have a friend, so he sets out to find one.
During his travels, the Dong encounters a number of strange and wonderful creatures, including something called a Quangle Wangle, who invites him to a party. The Dong also encounters something named a Pobble, which has no toes, and a Jumblie, who teaches him how to dance. Even though he is on an adventure few would forget and despite him meeting many interesting people, the Dong is still lonely and eventually returns to his home in the Jumbly Bay. There, he discovers that a creature called the Blue Baboon has wanted to have a friendship the whole time. In other words, the Dong didn't need to travel very far to find love or friendship. It was waiting for him the whole time.
