The Darkest Minds Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Allegory of power/control corruption

This novel could be seen as an allegory for corrupted seeking of power. The children with powers could be compared to a weapon that is unpredictable and therefore there is a need to control that weapon, either out of fear or out of hunger for power. The government officials that entrap the children into camps are doing it out of fear and when the weapon-children become unpredictable it is time to get rid of them, to destroy them, to kill them. The Children's League is purely looking at these kids as weapons that are disposable or replaceable in their path to gaining power.

Allegory of otherness

This novel could also be seen as an allegory for otherness - the way that humans treat the other, unknown to them, it raises fear and need for controlling the other in order to maintain their safety. This control is justified with the notion that the other is different from them and therefore dangerous. This is mirrored in the way the kids with special powers are put into camps exploited and treated there as less than human.

White Noise symbolism

White Noise symbolizes a leash that is used to control the kids with special powers. It is a sound that can only be heard by them and immobilizes them. It is their weakness and is used as a weapon against them.
