Asking for help is not giving up.
Mackesy reminds readers that no matter how strong you are, it is impossible to solve all your problems. Therefore, we should not be shy to seek help because that is not a sign of giving up. In The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse, the fox is trapped and when he realizes that he will not rescue himself, he requests the mole to help him. The mole is a minute animal compared to the fox. However, the mole succeeds in freeing the fox. Therefore, the fox refuses to give up when he realizes he needs help.
True friendship
True friendship is one of the most important themes in The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse. The story begins by showing the boy’s frustration because he cannot trace his home. Fortunately, the mole, fox, and horse join the boy and encourage him to remain positive. The boy traverses the wilderness with his friends day and night to find his home. When the boy gets tired, the horse carries him while the fox ensures they are secure from predators. Consequently, The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse is a story about true friendship because the four allies do not insult each other. Instead, they look forward to living in harmony and helping each other to achieve their goals.
Valuing one’s self
According to Mackesy, the most important thing an individual should do is to value himself regardless of his size, flaws, or apprehension. In The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse, all characters encourage each other to be proud of whom they are. Most importantly, the characters say positive words about each other in spite of their limitations. When the boy first meets the mole, he notes that the mole feels insignificant because of his small size. However, the boy tells the mole that size does not matter because they can work together toward achieving a specific goal. After the mole realizes his significance, he is energized and joins the boy in searching for his home. The other illustration showing that size is insignificant is when the mole rescues the trapped fox. Therefore, Mackesy reminds readers of the importance of accepting themselves and working towards improving their lives instead of focusing on their limitations.
