The Black Atlantic

The Black Atlantic Analysis

The Black Atlantic: Modernity and Double Consciousness is a historical, social science book about African, American, British, and Caribbean cultures. The book was written by Paul Gilroy and was published by Harvard University Press in 1993.

The book explores the concept of what it means to identify as ‘Black’ and the heterogeneity of expression amongst different groups. Gilroy touches on how slavery connected black people together because they were all subjected to harsh treatment at the hands of white people. He also reflects on the role of music in artistic expression of notable black icons in maintaining the diaspora of different groups throughout the years.

The Guardian praised the book and stated, "Whilst others scarcely put a toe in the water, in The Black Atlantic Gilroy goes in deep and returns with riches." The Independent stated that "Paul Gilroy is one of the most incisive thinkers of his generation... One can only hope that his voice travels far and wide."
