The Attack Irony

The Attack Irony

Irony of the victim

When we find out Jaafari’s wife has died in the terrorist attack, we instantly believe that she is a victim, as does Jaafari. However, we then find out that she is the main suspect in the investigation.

Irony of stereotypes

The terrorist in this text is shown to be incredibly different from the stereotypical idea of a terrorist. Firstly, the suicide bomber is a woman. She is also the wife of a successful surgeon and was believed to have had neutral political beliefs. On the outside, it seems that nobody has any idea what she would do.

Irony of neutrality

Jaafari has painstakingly tried to present himself as politically neutral in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. However, he becomes embroiled in the conflict in a very personal sense as his wife becomes an extremist suicide bomber. As such, he is pulled into the conflict and is judged by people around him who assume that he knew about her plans.
