The Annals Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Augustus

Augustus Caesar ultimately symbolizes a peaceful and righteous emperor. According to Tacitus, his reign brought peace to the Roman empire after years of civil war.

Tiberius

Tacitus describes the reign of Tiberius as being harsh and rigorous. This being said, the strength and power of Tiberius are applauded by Tacitus.

Nero

Nero's reign was characterized by cruelty and tyranny, according to Tacitus. Culturally, Nero is still a symbol of merciless leadership today.

Peace

Peace is a key motif in this text, as Tacitus chronicles events that occurred under the leadership of various Roman emperors. Tacitus tells us that Augustus was the most peaceful leader, and put an end to the years of civil war preceding him. On the other hand, Nero was the most belligerent emperor.

Tyranny

The balance between freedom, order, and tyranny is something Tacitus writes about often in this text. For example, Tacitus comments on the rise of Tyranny during the reign of Nero, and how freedom was sacrificed as a result.
