The Annals Characters

The Annals Character List

Tacitus

This Roman historian was already writing frequent histories when he penned this book. Instead of giving a full story though, Tacitus tells about each emperor individually, providing indirect character portraits to his readers, and explaining the decay of the state from Augustus's peaceful reign to the reign of Nero.

Augustus Caesar

After the civil wars that plagued Rome at the end of the BC era, it was a difficult task to lead the nation. But Tacitus tells that Augustus's reign was one where he accomplished peace. Although Augustus's reign was already seeing some of the early signs of serious political corruption, Augustus is regarded in the Annals as a good emperor.

Tiberius

Tiberius succeeds Augustus's reign at the time of Augustus's death. Tiberius is regarded in the Annals as a tough man and a harsh emperor, but Tiberius was also incredibly powerful and helpful to the state in many regards.

Nero

Nero is the final emperor in the Annals, which cuts off in year 66 AD, just a few years before the next regime change. Nero's reign is despised by his people. He is a ruthless dictator without honor, a despicable man (in Tacitus's opinion).
