Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh, Scotland to a prosperous Irish-Catholic family. His mother loved to read and instilled a similar love of writing in her son. He started making up stories when he was a young boy at boarding school. After school, Doyle decided to become a doctor. At medical school, Doyle met Dr. Joseph Bell, the doctor who inspired the character of Sherlock Holmes. Bell was known for his deductive and observational talents. After medical school, Doyle worked as a medical officer on a ship, but he did not like the job and ended up returning to Europe.
