    Why does Sherlock choose not to tell Miss Mary she had been tricked? Do you think he was right to do this? Why or why not?

    Sherlock, presumably, decides not to tell Miss Mary about her family’s treachery because he thinks she will be better off if she can go back home and be able to face her family. Some students may agree with him. It may have been unlikely that a woman could live independently of any family and have a full life at this moment in history. However, other students may argue that Sherlock should have told her so that she could have made an informed decision about where she wanted to live and so that she would have felt free to marry another man.
