Chapter 5 - Dynamics of Uniform Circular Motion - Problems - Page 138: 19

Answer

(a) $F_c=87.6N$ (b) $T=180.7N$

Work Step by Step

(a) The monkey's mass $m=9.5kg$, radius of circular path $r=85cm=0.85m$ and its speed $v=2.8m/s$ $$F_c=\frac{mv^2}{r}=87.6N$$ (b) The monkey's arm has to provide 2 forces: - A force $F$ that supports its weight. So, $F=mg=93.1N$ - Centripetal force $F_c$ for the monkey's swinging $F_c=87.6N$ Therefore, the magnitude of the tension in the monkey's arm is $$T=F+F_c=180.7N$$
