Newton's second law explains this. A heavy body doesn’t fall faster than a light body because even though the gravitational force is greater by a factor of X, the force acts on a mass that is larger by the same factor, X. The greater inertia means that the ratio of gravitational force to mass is the same, and so is the acceleration.
