Chapter 48 - The Immune System in Animals - Review - Page 1028: 7

Answer

Clonal selection is important for an adaptive response as this process has receptor diversity to recognize pathogens, but not in innate response. The adaptive response is highly specific, but innate produces a generic response. Hence option (b) is the correct answer.

Work Step by Step

The theory of clonal selection explains the generation of antibody diversity based on the antigen specificity. A specific antibody is produced against a specific antigen by undergoing VDJ recombination. The self-reactive antibodies are negatively selected or they undergo alteration in their specificity. The adaptive immune response is specific because of the production of antigen-specific antibodies. The adaptive system has evolved itself for production of different receptor antibodies. A specific antigen induces clonal expansion of specific antibodies that can efficiently clear the invading pathogen from the system. Hence, clonal selection is necessary for adaptive immune response for generating antibody diversity from a single gene by rearranging itself and clones are highly specific against antigen.
