Chapter 3 - Cells: The Living Units - Review Questions - Page 114: 23

Answer

The extensions found on cells lining the trachea are called cilia. These cilia originate from microtubules which are also found within the cells that line the trachea. The function of these cilia in the trachea are to move debris-containing mucus out of the lungs in order to be swallowed or expelled.

Work Step by Step

Ciliated epithelial tissue is commonly found in our respiratory tract. This tissue must have cilia in order to move mucus, which is also created by this epithelial tissue via goblet cells. Microtubules are responsible for forming structures for movement such as flagella, or most notably in this case, cilia. These microtubules are commonly found in eukaryotic cells.
