Chapter 3 - Cells: The Living Units - Review Questions - Page 114: 20

Answer

Mitosis is the process by which a cell replicates itself and becomes two daughter cells. This happens during times when cells age and die, or when rapid growth is needed in organs, such as when there is tissue damage. In movies, some characters have immortality in that their bodies rebuild themselves or heal rapidly. Cells in the body do similarly when cells die and need to be replaced with an identical cell that will quickly take up its role.

Work Step by Step

" Cell division is essential for body growth and tissue repair. Cells that continually wear away, such as cells of the skin and intestinal lining, reproduce themselves continuously. Others, such as liver cells, divide more slowly but retain the ability to reproduce quickly if the organ is damaged."
