Answer

The structure that allows pressure in the middle ear to be equalized with atmospheric pressure is the pharyngotympanic tube, formerly known as the Eustachian tube.

Work Step by Step

The pharyngotympanic tube --the erstwhile Eustachian tube-- it is also called the auditory tube. It extends for about 1.5 inches from the middle ear to the back of the naso -pharynx and empties into the throat. Its function is to equalize the pressure between the middle ear and the outside or atmospheric pressure.
