Chapter 9 - The Endocrine System - Review Questions - Page 361: 10

Answer

The nervous system gives faster responses than the endocrine system. The nervous system uses chemicals and synapses to communicate between neurons or to effector cells, whereas the endocrine system secretes hormones into the circulatory system from where they travel to their target organ. Both the nervous and endocrine systems control body processes related to survival or maintaining homeostasis. The nervous system provides quick responses in immediate situations, like when we put a hand on a hot surface, the nervous system instantly sends signals for muscles to contract and remove the hand. Whereas the endocrine system controls slow processes of the body and can take from two minutes to hours.
