Chapter 7 - Algebra: Graphs, Functions, and Linear Systems - 7.5 Linear Programming - Exercise Set 7.5 - Page 462: 20

Answer

Objective function in the form of an algebraic linear expression is described in one or two variables that must be maximized or minimized according to the constraints given for the solution.

Work Step by Step

Sometimes it is necessary to maximize or minimize the quantities involved in many problems to get the solution or to get the clarity of facts for taking decision. For this use of linear algebraic expressions are highly useful. Objective function in the form of an algebraic linear expression is described in one or two variables that must be maximized or minimized according to the constraints given and need of the solution. Method that is used to do this is called linear programming method. For example, one water bottle used to serve 5 people and one food kit is enough to serve the 5 people. Then: Number of people served would be equal to 5 times water bottles used added to 5times food kits used. This means \[z=5x+5y\], where z number of people are served with x number of water bottles and y number of food kit. For a value of x and y, there is one and only one value for z. Here z is a function of x and y.
