Chapter 7 - Algebra: Graphs, Functions, and Linear Systems - 7.5 Linear Programming - Exercise Set 7.5 - Page 462: 19

Answer

Linear programming method is used to solve the kind of problems in which a particular measure or quantity must be maximized or minimized limited with given constraint.

Work Step by Step

Sometimes, it is necessary to maximize or minimize the quantities involved in many problems to get the solution or to get the clarity of facts for taking decision. For this, use of algebraic expressions are highly useful. In this, an objective function in the form of an algebraic expression is described in one or two variables that must be maximized or minimized according to the constraints given and need of the solution. Method used to do this is called linear programming method. In other words, linear programming method is used to solve the kind of problems in which a particular measure or quantity must be maximized or minimized limited with given constraints. For example, to port the maximal aid of food, clothes, basic amenities, and medical kits to flood hit areas in minimum rounds of transport in minimum time. Here food, clothes, basic amenities, medical kits are to maximize to meet the need of affected ones with the constraint that this should reach to them in minimum period and in minimum rounds of transport.
