Vasavadatta

This was an internal monologue that Vasavadatta was having. She was sorrowful for her husband King Udayana was engaged to her friend Padmavatti and the wedding was being rushed.

Who could have known that after being hurled in into such a whirlpool of misfortune, we should rise again to the surface.

The jester

The jester says these words because his king had been greatly wounded by the death of his wife Vasavadatta. Now he was getting married to Padmavatti and that brought joy in his heart.

My dear child, your words are worthy of your birth

Vasavadatta

Vasavadatta said these words to Padmavatti when she(Padmavatti) acknowledged that the king was right in feeling love for Vasavadatta who he thought was dead. Vasavadatta was impressed by Padmavatti because she(Padmavatti) recognized the love that had existed between her husband Udayana and Vasavadatta.

Though it was in the king's interest that I concealed the queen consort, though I can see that what I have done is to his benefit, yet even when my work is done my heart misgives me as to what my royal master will say.

Yaugandarayana

Yaugandarayana had hid Vasavadatta from the king. He had told the king that Vasavadatta had perished in a fire so that she could survive a coming war. Yaugandarayana was conflicted because even though he knew that his actions were for the benefit of the king, he did not know how the king would react to the deception.

To visit this kingdom, allied to ours by marriage ties, is a great joy but when I remember the death of our princess I am filled with sorrow.

Chamberlain of Avanti

The chamberlain of Avanti where Vasavadatta was born came to the King Udayana. The purpose of the visit was to acknowledge that even though Vasavadatta has perished in a fire, the relationship between Avanti and Vatsas had not been severed.
