Yaugandarayana
Yaugandarayana is the chief minister of King Udayana of the Vastas. The chief minister hatched a plan to hide the queen and himself from the king in order to avoid a disaster that was to befall the king.
Udayana
Udayana was the king of the Vastas. He was deceived that his beloved wife Vasavadatta and his chief minister Yaugandarayana had died after they were burnt alive. He was very distressed over the loss of his two most beloved people.
Vasavadatta
Vasavadatta was the Queen of the Vastas and the love of the King Udayana. She was hidden from the king where she disguised herself as the Lady Avanti and was under the protection of the king's second wife Padmavatti.
Padmavatti
Padmavatti was a princess therefore she was of royal blood. She was engaged and married to the King Udayana. Padmavatti had also agreed to guard Vasavadatta who was in disguise as the Lady Avanti.
The jester
The jester was a servant of the King Udayana and also his greatest confidant and friend. The jester consoled the king over the loss of his beloved wife Vasavadatta and advised him.
