“Ask for the impossible, then settle instead for what you really wanted in the first place.”
Faythe is a young woman at the prime of her age but being a female werecat and part of a Pride she cannot fully embrace her independence. She hopes to lead a regular life like other human girls and even leaves home to attend college. However, since there are few werecats left that are young enough to breed she is in danger as her kind is hunted by strays. This causes friction in the family because his father intends to ensure she is safe within the Pride. Despite that, she defies their warnings and goes into the world regardless of the danger rather than play the role she was born into. She is intentional in achieving her desired independence hence shares her sentiments to her brother with the statement. She makes selfish decisions defying the Pride’s wishes and while she has to resume her responsibilities in the pack she still attains her independence.
“The moment the door opened I knew an ass-kicking was inevitable. Whether I'd be giving it or receiving it was still a bit of a mystery.”
Faythe is out in the world where her safety is not guaranteed because she is not in close proximity to the Pride. By now she is trained and fierce but has not yet had to fight against real adversaries, in this case, the strays. Even though the strays roam without a pack they are extremely dangerous werecats, especially to the female werecats. She has the ability to detect them as much as the strays can also sense her presence. Therefore, every second she is out within the human circles she has to be extremely cautious, as she could be a victim at any moment. While she is determined and bold she also cannot grasp the scope of the danger until she has to face it firsthand.
“A cat’s body can sustain a lot of damage without actually dying”
The book is the beginning of a fantasy series about the shape-shifters that is action-packed owing to the conflicts in this world. Faythe is the heroine and her resilience is a trait she has to nurture with each stage of her life. When introduced in the story she has strong willpower but she is rather inexperienced and has a lot to learn from other older werecats. She is more vulnerable than others because she is a young female werecat and it is the Pride’s responsibility to convey their abilities and limits. Lucas, an enforcer, addresses the relentless fight that has existed in their world and the worst is yet to happen as tensions rise. As a consequence, the battles between the strays and werecats are ferocious and never-ending akin to the resilience of their physical anatomy.
