The description of the language building by the author aids readers in visualizing the surrounding environment, thus depicting the sense of sight. Faythe wants to get a good glimpse of the trespasser. As she kneels to tie her shoelaces, she keeps an eye on the trespasser to monitor what is going. The narrator writes, "Several feet from the sidewalk, I stepped on my shoelace, giving myself time to come up with a plan of action as I retied it. Kneeling, I kept one eye on the alley, watching for a glimpse of the trespasser.”
The imagery of the pants
Readers are introduced to the narrator’s pants through the sense of aroma. Faythe says, "By the time I had changed out my citrus-scented pants and packed what books and clothes I couldn’t do without, Sammi was back from the library.” Though confidential, readers can visualize the appearance of the narrator’s pants. The good aroma of the narrator’s pants also shows that she is neat and organized.
The imagery of hearing
The narrator falls asleep when she gets up but woken up later by the sounds of the car from a drive away. The sway of the car depicts a sense of hearing to readers. The narrator says, “I’d fallen asleep for real by the time we got home, but the crunch of gravel and the unmistakable sway of the car on our quatre-mile-long driveway woke me.”
