Section IX
The final section of the book begins at the end of Hsu’s senior year of college. He begins dating a fellow Berkeley student named Joie. They both dream of attending graduate school at NYU. Joie is admitted there, but Hsu is not and ends up going to Harvard. One night while visiting New York, Hsu meets up with friends from Berkeley. One of them asks him if he and Hsu were actually that close. The question troubles Hsu and causes him to reconsider his memories with Ken, wondering how much of the story he tells about their relationship is a story that focuses on himself.
