    What do you think Arthur would have been like if he had survived the outbreak?

    Though the novel opens with Arthur's death, readers learn about him as the story goes back in time. Arthur performed in his regular life as well as at work, enough that both Miranda and Clark wondered what part of him was real and what was his acting. However, toward the end of his life, Arthur had a lot of regrets. He was giving away his money and possessions, hoping only to be near his son.
