Magic

Magic is introduced by the existence of the Faerie world, which opens its borders every nine years. Tristan sees a shooting star land in Faerie and goes on a quest to bring it to his love, Victoria, in exchange for her hand in marriage. Tristan himself, is half-Faerie on his mother’s side, and therefore has magic within him. On his quest he meets all sorts of magical entities, including witches and unicorns and small faeries.

Youth

The Witch-Queen is a mighty witch who maintains her youth by consuming the heart of fallen stars. She is desperate for her and her sisters to find Yvaine in order to consume her heart and retain their youth and beauty. She places high value in maintaining her looks and goes to desperate attempts to kill Yvaine on her journey, failing each time. In the end, the Witch-Queen is unsuccessful and becomes an aged and bitter hag.

Love

At the start, Tristan thinks himself in love with Victoria, and so pledges to bring her a fallen star in the hopes that she will love him back in gratitude. However, he later realizes that the fallen star is actually a woman, Yvaine. He keeps her bound and forces her to journey with him back to the other side of the wall as a gift to Victoria, but as their journey goes on, the two begin to care for each other. Indeed, in the end they grow to love each other and marry.
