The book opens up with the protagonist, seven years old Marie sitting on the curb near her apartment waiting for her father. Marie and her father share a close relationship. As she waits, Marie revels in the exciting life of her neighbors, from the unforbidden romance of a Syrian girl and her Irish boyfriend to Billy Corrigan, a veteran who lost his eye in combat.
Marie feels loved and secure in her family. Her father, whom she adores, works as a clerk whereas her mother stays at home and takes care of her and Gabe. Despite the existing conflict between mother and daughter, Marie understands that her mother is the pillar that holds the family together. Her studious and spiritual brother, Gabe, wants to join the priesthood; his parents are very proud of his decision.
Everything seems perfect in Marie’s world until her beloved father dies and her life feels shattered for a moment. She lashes out at her mother which aggravates their existing conflict. Gabe abandons the priesthood and returns home to take care of his mother. Shortly after, Marie suffers another heartbreak when her boyfriend leaves her for a rich girl.
Years pass and Marie gets married to Gabe’s friend from the parish. After she gets pregnant, Marie and her husband decide to move away from the neighborhood. Gabe is left taking care of his mother.
