Protagonist and Antagonist

Major Conflict

The major conflict between Marie and her mother is aggravated when her father dies. Marie's father was the closest person around her, and she adored him with all respect, which made her feel secure.

Climax

The climax comes when Marie is heartbroken by her boyfriend, who leaves her for another boyfriend.

Foreshadowing

Marie's break up with her boyfriend foreshadows a happy future for her. The boyfriend was not fit because she had multiple sexual affairs. Later on, Marie is married to Gabe's parish friend, and they live happily after that.

Understatement

Gabe's decision to join the priesthood is an understatement because he does not know what the future holds for him. At last, Gabe is forced to leave the seminary to take care of his ailing mother. He never becomes a priest.

Allusions

The forbidden love between a Syrian girl and her Irish boyfriend is an allusion that love is blind. Despite Bill losing his eyesight in war, the Syrian girl finds him the most handsome man on earth. Therefore, love is blind because it does not choose.

Imagery

Marie's description of herself is imagery that aids readers to visualize her physical appearance and the environment around her. Marie describes herself as a cartoon with wide eyes and a serious mouth.

Paradox

The death of Marie's father is paradoxical because, at one moment, the family is happy, but at another moment, it is grieving. Consequently, the death of Marie's father shows the paradox of life.

Parallelism

The story of the relationship between the Syrian girl and Billy is parallel to that of Marie's relationship with her parish boyfriend, who marries her at last.

Metonymy and Synecdoche

Personification

The cartoon is personified to perform Marie's roles because it has wide eyes that resemble a human being.
