During the play, who do you find yourself sympathizing with more: Drouet or Hurstwood? Or do you not have sympathy with either of them? What exactly motivates your feelings?

Answers will vary according to the students. Some will have greater sympathy for Drouet because it's his support that brings out the best in Carrie’s performance. However, others will feel more for Hurstwood because he used his influence to bring the huge audience to the show. Whatever the answer, students should note that both men play a role in Carrie’s development, while also acknowledging that it is ultimately Carrie who does the acting.
