Chapter 9
This chapter shifts focus to George Hurstwood and his family. Thanks to Hurstwood’s position, his family enjoys a great deal of money and influence, but it isn’t enough for them. Julia, Hurstwood’s wife, constantly fires their servants because they disappoint her. His daughter Jessica complains about not moving up in the social stratus, while his lazy son George Jr. simply expects to be given a good job. Hurstwood has nothing but contempt for his family and seeks to escape them as soon as possible.
