Alina's powers
Alina's special powers mean she is unique and respected by others. However, the powers also ironically put her in great danger.
What is infinite?
In an ironic statement, Bardugo states:
“What is infinite? The universe and the greed of men.”
Here, she is making a comment about the fact that human greed is seemingly infinite.
Humour and irony
Bardugo often uses irony and humor in this text, especially in the interactions between favorite characters. In the following passage, Nikolai responds ironically to Mal's jibe:
“Watch yourself, Nikolai,” Mal said softly. “Princes bleed just like other men.”
Nikolai plucked an invisible piece of dust from his sleeve. “Yes,” he said. “They just do it in better clothes.”
Nikolai
Nikolai is shown to have an ironic sense of humor, which often reveals his arrogance. For example,
“Nikolai,” he corrected. “But I’ve also been known to answer to ‘sweetheart’ or ‘handsome.”
Bad idea
Ironically, Sturmhond states that "Anything worth doing always starts as a bad idea.” This is ironic because we might not expect a bad idea to lead anywhere useful.
