Cofton
Alina uses imagery to describe her stay in Cofton. For example, she describes how the delicacy of a "calf and collard pie" was giving off a "very peculiar smell," showing how she is somewhere unfamiliar. Later, Alina describes how "it was the center of the jurda trade, surrounded by fields of the little orange flowers that people chewed by the bushel."
Corporalnik Heartrenders
These are the Darkling's "favored soldiers," who support the Darkling in his endeavors. Alina expresses her fear about these soldiers, stating that they:
"Could stop my heart or crush my lungs without ever landing a blow."
This use of imagery shows how frightening and powerful these soldiers are.
An old-fashioned city
Going into more detail, Alina describes the city of Cofton, stating that "it didn't feel quite real to me." She tells us that there is something "raw" and "unfinished" about it, that "most of the streets were unpaved." Overall, this gives Cofton a distinct quality, of being somewhat old-fashioned.
